Layoff Reasons

Having spent over a decade in IT, I’ve seen careers built with passion… and shattered without warning.
The word “layoff” rarely appears in calendars.
But the signs? They show up—quietly, subtly, and often too late.
A few years ago, I watched a close colleague go from leading projects to being on the bench… then out of the system.
That day changed how I viewed job security.
Here are 4 lessons I’ve learned (and now look out for):
1️⃣ Skills Age Fast
What made you valuable 2 years ago might be redundant today. Continuous learning is no longer optional—it’s survival.
2️⃣ The Bench is a Signal
Sitting idle isn’t always your fault—but it is your responsibility. Stay visible. Stay ready.
3️⃣ Politics Isn’t a Bad Word
Understanding people and building relationships internally can matter just as much as technical skill.
4️⃣ Company ≠ Career
Sometimes companies collapse despite your best work. Don’t anchor your identity solely to your employer. Build you.
P.S.
No one plans to face a layoff. But if you stay aware, prepared, and connected—you’ll weather it better.
